Doodlewash November

Welcome to another response to Doodlewash month! I love the mindfulness nature of drawing and creating images. Doodlewash prompts for November look very challenging...

Lets start with Acorn...This is my simple response!

Charcoal Sketching

There is something very tactile about charcoal, and messy. It takes you back to school days and if you are brave and don't mind a bit of mess then it's an ideal sketching tool.

In this intro video I show the basics of using charcoal.

Work in Progress

Hi. This is a series of images of my new process to mix pastel with Ink. I'm loving the act of creating dark passages of ink and then overlaying pastel. Let me know what you think! Have you had experimented with this method? Are there any pit falls I should be aware of (I must remember to let the ink dry before erasing the pencil lines!).

The Blacksmith

This is my pastel rendition of a painting I am calling the Blacksmith. I particularly liked the light in the sketch I created and I tried to bring in that light which was generated by the window, the fire in the grate and also a door to the left hand side. Some of the perspective is a bit wonky but I can live with that. I haven't attempted to draw the features of the mans face but the tonal contrasts are suggesting the details nicely.

Day 3 - Doodlewash February Challenge

Today we are back with the Bloop's. This time swinging on time, and enjoying every second. I don't think there is any more puns to have here.

Day 2 - Doodlewash February 2021 Challenge

Todays' prompt is Penguin. I can't resist painting penguins. They always seem so damn cute. This is a basic watercolour wash with Inktense pencil over the top.

February Doodlewash Challenge

I've decided to do another month of Doodlewash challenges. Not sure what inspired me but I do like daily painting. Todays image is of my new character the Bloops. These little guys will get into to all sorts of mischief. This is the prompt - Reflection.

Thursday 14 January 2021

This is a watercolour demonstration using my simple approach to ink and wash. I use a loose watercolour method using a big brush with lovely juicy washes. This video shows the full technique from start to finish. The technique is similar to Edward Wesson but uses brighter colours. In this video I draw with ink with pencil lines to help with perspective. Watercolours used (all Windsor and Newton)- French Ultramarine, Colbolt Blue, Burnt Sienna, Windsor Yellow, Permanent Rose. The paper is Hahnemuhle anniversary watercolour paper, approx 30 * 40 inches. Brushes are a Jackson Quill No6, a Number 10 round and a long hair number 6. A New Year of Ideas

Happy New Year everyone. I have decided to start the year by publishing 3 video tutorials using my watercolour technique. It's a fairly simple 4 step process.

1) drawing

2) initial wash

3) add dark tones

4) details

The equipment I use is simple, a matchstick pen similar to the one Edward Wesson would have used, A large mop brush and a limited watercolour colour palette consisting of warm and cool colours - windsor yellow, quinacridone gold, colbolt blue, ultramarine blue, burnt Sienna and permanent rose.

All the details are in the video.
